UC Davis emergency officials encourage employees and students to review and add to their contact information used for the WarnMe emergency notification system before it is tested midday on Wednesday, April 24.

In the last of three regular tests for the academic year, UC Davis will send alerts by text message and email to faculty, staff and students, all of whom are automatically registered to receive alerts through their UC Davis email. Text messages will be sent to those who have added mobile numbers to their WarnMe contact information.

We are thrilled to announce Margaret Berrens, a Ph.D. candidate in Physical Chemistry, and Diego Lopez Mateos, a Ph.D. candidate in Biophysics, have been selected as two of the 20 UC President’s Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings Fellows for the 73rd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings in Physics taking place from June 30-July 5, 2024. This prestigious honor comes after a rigorous multi-stage selection process, first at UC Davis, and then by the UC President, who recognized their potential to represent the UC system.

January is National Mentoring Month. We reached out to three graduate students to get some insight into how Graduate Studies' mentoring resources have impacted their educational and scholarly journey. We asked each of them two questions:

• Why is mentoring important to graduate student success?
• Why is it important for Graduate Studies to offer mentorship programs that cultivate a strong mentorship culture at UC Davis?

What is mentorship?

Things will look a little different around campus during the winter break, but resources are still available for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. UC Davis will be closed December 25, 26, and 29, and January 1, for the winter holidays. Staffing is expected to be minimal December 27-28.

School of Education PhD student Antoinette Banks, BS ’22, has won the Pharrell Williams Black Ambition grand prize of $1 million for Expert IEP, her parent-facing app that uses predictive AI to optimize existing individualized education plans for children diagnosed with disabilities.

In many ways, Jessi Jarrin’s story at UC Davis is just beginning to be written. A first-year MFA in poetry student, Jarrin was awarded a prestigious Eugene Cota-Robles Fellowship, providing her with full tuition and fees plus a stipend for two years to support her graduate education.
