Second Annual Provost's Fellowships Honored
This year marks the second round of UC Davis Provost's Fellowships in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. An awards reception was held in the Student Community Center on campus Jan. 23, 2014. In attendance were Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Ralph J. Hexter, Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of Graduate Studies Jeffery C. Gibeling, Interim Dean Mary E. Delany, Dean Jessie Ann Owens, and Dean George R. Mangun, this year's fellows and their family and friends, last year's fellows, and faculty and staff.
The Provost's Fellowships (in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences) is an initiative which began in 2012-13 that distributes $2 million of campus funding to 50 UC Davis Ph.D. and M.F.A. students each year. Both competitive first-year and dissertation-year recipients are chosen based on academic performance within the participating programs of study. Through the Provost's allocations, the fellowship provides a $25,000 stipend to each recipient in addition to the remission of tuition and fees for the school year.
The initiative aims to help the graduate recipients focus more on their coursework and research goals. Additionally, the Provost's Fellowship is designed to enhance the overall quality of education in arts, humanities, and social sciences at UC Davis, and recruit top prospective graduate students from around the world to their respective programs of study.
During the reception ceremony, fellows were announced and honored by their respective deans (Interim Dean Mary E. Delany, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; Dean Jessie Ann Owens, Division of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies; Dean George R. Mangun, Division of Social Sciences). Student testimonials were given by first-year fellows Nina Farnia and Jenny Colmenero and dissertation-year fellows John Kincaid, Jess Curtis, and Ryan N. Schacht. Each shared his or her story and how the fellowship enhanced their graduate education. The ceremony concluded with a group photo outside the Student Community Center.
