The main areas of faculty specialization are: history of philosophy (both ancient and modern); metaphysics; epistemology; philosophy of language; philosophy of science (especially biology, physics, and mathematics); ethics; and social and political philosophy. The orientation of the department is largely analytic. Students wishing to pursue the Ph.D. are not required to have first completed the master's degree.

The department does not accept master's only students, but students wishing to acquire a master's degree during completion of their Ph.D. will earn an M.A. Plan II.

This is a Departmentally-based Graduate Program.
