Building Bridges: A Support Group for AAPI Students

This group is a confidential support group for Asian and Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) undergraduate and graduate men and women. Breaking Free of Stress and Anxiety Group

The Stress & Wellness Clinic at Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) is now accepting participants for a six-session weekly group for students experiencing stress, anxiety, exhaustion, and/or burnout. The group is designed to help participants better understand how stress and anxiety are at work in their lives and ways to create and maintain balance. They will learn and practice relaxation and stress reduction techniques in the group. This group may be especially helpful for participants who suffer from physical symptoms of stress (i.e., headaches, muscular tension, and stomach pain), or who would like to enhance their overall health, performance, and general well-being. Taking Steps Through Depression

Physical activity (such as walking) and supportive connections are related to elevations in mood and stress reduction. This six to eight week group for students struggling with depression, will have two important components – a structured workshop that will provide support and strategies for dealing with depression, and a 30-minute mindfulness walking activity. How to Get a Good Night's Sleep

Tired of counting sheep? This is a four-session weekly group for students experiencing difficulties falling or staying asleep due to stress or anxiety concerns. The group is designed to provide helpful strategies and relaxation techniques for a good night's sleep. Participants will also learn about the role of sleep hygiene and self-care in addressing sleep disturbance. Sistah-to-Sistah: A Discussion Group for African American Women

This drop-in discussion group is specifically tailored to address needs and issues salient to African American women. The purpose is to initiate community, education, and support for African American women who are students at UCD. Our theme for the year is “Mind, Body & Soul”. Each quarter we will focus on topics related to uplifting the mental, physical, and emotional health of African American women. This is a drop-in group; therefore, weekly attendance is not required. However we encourage participants to return for ongoing renewal and connection.

Mid-Quarter Stress Busters Sessions

Body Esteem Boot Camp
3:10 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. l Memorial Union (MU), DeCarli & Garrison Rooms – April 8 through May 6
Body Esteem Boot Camp is a five-week workshop series that focuses on increasing positive body esteem and challenging environmental and societal factors that are unhealthy for body image. Each week there will be a brief presentation followed by group activities and discussion on the following topics:
Week 1 (April 8) - Defining Body Esteem
Week 2 (April 15) - Talking Back to the Media
Week 3 (April 22) - Defining Ourselves: Family and Cultural Perceptions
Week 4 (April 29) - Mindfulness: Increasing Our Awareness
Week 5 (May 6) - Getting Intimate: Body Image and Relationships

Relaxation for Stress Reduction Group

This is a five-session weekly group for students who would like to learn and practice relaxation exercises for stress reduction. The group is experientially based. Group members will learn how diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery, and meditation exercises can be applied to everyday life to decrease stress and increase one's overall sense of well-being. Graduate Relationship Group

The Graduate Relationship Group provides opportunities to graduate and professional students for personal growth and self-awareness. Biofeedback Group
5:10 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. l CAPS in North Hall
Facilitator: Christopher Stevens, Ph.D.
This group utilizes an innovative biofeedback computer software program that teaches students self-regulation skills, such as breathing, meditation, and relaxation strategies that enable them to reduce stress, anxiety, or chronic pain. Participants will attend six group sessions plus commit an additional one-two hours a week to using the biofeedback program independently. Nourish: The Body and The Self

This support group is for graduate students, as well as re-entry and transfer undergraduate women who would like to better understand themselves and others. Common topics discussed in the group include: influences of cultural background and ethnic identity, time and stress management, academic pressures, depression, anxiety, gender roles, self-identity, how to get your own needs met, assertive communication, family concerns, boundary setting, relationships, and self-esteem. The Worry Group is a five-week psychoeducational group for students who struggle with constant worrying and who want to address the worry that is holding them back in their personal or academic lives. Join the Living Juicy Group to reconnect with playfulness, spontaneity, creativity, and meaning. Through writing activities, visualizations, and play dates, this seven-week group helps you find inspiration and deeper connection with yourself, others, and the world around you. Men’s Group

This is an interpersonal process group for men that aims to raise awareness of one's self and one's style of relating with others through experiential means. Participants will improve their social skills in addition to addressing personal issues such as loneliness, communication, culture, intimacy, sex, stress, sadness, performance, anger, procrastination, and pornography use. Other topics and issues will be welcomed. Being “real” and connecting with other men are essential to growth and maturation in life. Lavender Connection: A LGBTQ Support Group

The Lavender Connection is a support group for students (undergraduate and graduates) who are looking for a safe and confidential space to discuss issues related to their sexual identity. The group will provide a supportive and affirming environment where students can share common experiences and increase their sense of understanding regarding their own sexual identity, relationships with others, and sense of empowerment. Areas of focus may include the influence of cultural background and ethnic identity, fostering self-acceptance, coming out to yourself and others, dating, spirituality, campus climate, and family relationships. LOTUS: Ending Emotional Eating Through Acceptance and Change

This eight-week workshop will teach students specific skills to free themselves from emotional eating and enhance their lives. Each week there will be a mindfulness exercise and a brief presentation of skills along with group activities and discussion. The skills learned will be mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness. Skills will be practiced each week for homework. Mindfulness meditation is about learning to experience life fully as it unfolds – moment by moment. Grief Group

If you have experienced the death of someone close to you, join the grief group to find support, share knowledge, and learn coping strategies. This group is designed for students who have experienced the death of someone significant. Through a combination of art therapy, education, and discussion, members will find support while moving through bereavement. Balancing Weight Management and Athletic Performance

Being an athlete provides students with both great opportunities as well as unique stressors. Due to these demands, student-athletes may experience difficulties with body image, nutrition, excessive exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight. This group will provide student-athletes with a supportive environment in which they can explore healthy strategies for balancing performance and weight management. All athletes are welcome. Building Social Confidence: A Social Skills Support Group

This is a time-limited group that will focus on learning how to increase confidence in social situations. We will learn and practice “social skills” – the foundation for successful interpersonal relationships. The focus of the group will be on increasing one's confidence through effective communication skills, assertion skills and we will explore how to build social support and “community”. We will also address individual goals as presented by group members, developing and maintaining friendships, dating, and confidence with academic assertion and public speaking.
