You are encouraged to seek external funding, both for your education and for your research. Applying for external fellowships and grants is a good professional development experience and receiving external grants and fellowships looks great on your curriculum vita.

Extramural Fellowship Application Procedure

The Office of Graduate Studies is responsible for the review and approval of proposals to external agencies, government institutions, private foundations, etc., submitted by graduate students and postdoctoral scholars who are listed as the principal applicant or principle investigator (P.I.)".

Applications requiring "institutional review or signature" of an "officer" or "official" of the University must be routed to the Office of Graduate Studies (OGS). The OGS Fellowship/Grant Adviser, Deborah McCook, will review the application for completeness, checking that the information is consistent with the requirements of the agency, and is acceptable to the mission and policies of the University. Upon satisfactory review, the Associate Dean will sign the proposal. Students/programs are responsible for pick-up and mailing of applications (unless institutional submission is required).

Please note the following information when submitting a proposal:

  • The Grant/Research Proposal Data Form and the original proposal must have all required signatures before they are submitted to Graduate Studies. The form is in PDF format, you must download Adobe Acrobat Reader to print the form. The complete, original proposal, plus one extra copy must be submitted with the Proposal Data Form (copy will be retained in OGS files). If proposal is to be submitted electronically, a complete copy must be printed from the Web site and submitted with form.
  • Financial Disclosure Form (if applicable).
  • A copy of the agency/organization application guidelines must also be attached to the Proposal and Data Form.
  • Please include the name, title, and address information for the official signatory, Associate Dean Edward P. Caswell-Chen, and the campus financial information on grant pages requiring this information.
  • Please allow a minimum of three working days for processing hard copy applications, and five working days for electronic submissions requiring institutional contributions and submission. Note: Some institutional submissions require an earlier deadline as posted at the time of announcement.
