I am so excited to bring you the first quarterly GSADC blog of the 2019/20 academic year! It has been a whirlwind of a few months but I am so proud and extremely happy to serve as an advocate for graduate students across the UC Davis Campus. Rather than elaborate about what my day-to-day activities as the GSADC has been like thus far (to put it simply: meetings, meetings, and more meetings!

Elizabeth Sturdy, who previously served as a Senior Academic Advisor in the division, was named the new Director of Mentoring and Advising earlier this academic year. She assumed the role on November 18.

This week, the California Aggie Alumni Association announced that David Loury ’79, Ph.D. ’84, has been named the recipient of the 2020 Aggie Service Award in recognition of his contributions to multitude of campus initiatives over the course of several decades. The award honors UC Davis graduates who have demonstrated exemplary Aggie pride and dedication to UC Davis through personal commitment of time, energy, volunteerism and leadership.

Third-year mechanical and aerospace engineering Ph.D. student Dane Sterbentz is a recipient of the Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration’s Laboratory Residency Graduate Fellowship (DOE NNSA LRGF). Sterbentz, part of professor J.P. Delplanque’s research group, is one of just four doctoral students across the country to receive the fellowship.

Graduate students have a new advocate in Graduate Studies. Slande Erole, a Ph.D. candidate in the Political Science graduate program, will serve as Graduate Student Assistant to the Dean of Graduate Studies and to the Chancellor (GSADC) for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Graduate Studies recently partnered with the Division of Student Affairs, the UC Davis School of Law and the Student Disability Center (SDC) to launch a one-year pilot program that will allow graduate students to work with an on-site disability specialist.
