Today, UC Davis Ph.D. graduate Erwin Bautista teaches classes with as many as 500 students, an ambitious amount of minds to keep engaged. Bautista wants to help his students connect the small dots so they can see the big picture. And that’s a philosophy he carries with him in his day-to-day life. 

The American Physiological Society (APS) recently announced the 2018 Graduate Student Ambassadors (GSA): Arik Davidyan, Kamila Migdal, Chelsea Weaver, Oluwatobiloba "Deborah" Osikoya. The GSA Program provides an opportunity for graduate student members of APS to serve as a liaison to promote physiology and the APS within their local universities. The 2018 class of ambassadors join the 2017 GSAs to build leadership and outreach skills, promote physiology, and increase awareness of the benefits of APS membership.

Three UC Davis graduate students, Lauren Howe (International Agricultural Development), Erik Grijalva (Ecology), and Matthew Williamson (Ecology), have achieved the high honor of being selected as Switzer Environmental Fellows by the Robert and Patricia Switzer Foundation. 

As a master’s student at the University of Michigan, Allison Injaian studied the behaviors of a unique species of wasp. Named Polistes fuscatus, these wasps—much like humans—recognize one another based on facial markings. For an organism with such a tiny brain compared to humans, the mastery of such specialized visual learning was described by Injaian’s advisor and lab mentor Professor Elizabeth Tibbetts as “surprising and sort of bizarre.”

UC Davis graduate student Carina Fish has been named a 2018 recipient of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship.

For Karin Albornoz — a Ph.D. student studying Horticulture and Agronomy who works in a UC Davis lab on molecular biology of tomato postharvest chilling injury — that means getting out into the world to work directly with small-scale farmers.

Sarah Messbauer is a doctoral candidate in ethnomusicology, studying the impacts of public arts policy on refugee communities in Canada. Messbauer recently completed her tenure as the 2016-2017 graduate student assistant to the dean and chancellor, where she engaged in programming and advocacy efforts aimed at improving the student experience for more than 8,000 graduate and professional students at UC Davis.
